In a significant step toward bolstering the digital security of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Somalia, the Puntland NGO Network (PUNTNGO), with the support of Bareedo Platform, organized a two-day training session in Garowe, Puntland, Somalia, from June 27 to 28, 2024. The training brought together representatives from over 35 at-risk CSOs from various regions across the country.
This initiative aimed to equip these organizations with the knowledge and skills to utilize Microsoft’s secure software and products, which are available to nonprofit organizations free of charge or at a discounted price after approval. The training emphasized leveraging Microsoft’s advanced security tools to prevent cyberattacks, detect and mitigate threats, and effectively respond to data breaches.
Building Digital Resilience
Prior to the training, PUNTNGO and Bareedo Platform had been providing months of individualized technical assistance to these CSOs. This preparatory work focused on helping organizations develop sustainable internal digital security policies and actionable plans to address cybersecurity challenges. As part of this support, organizations were guided on how to access Microsoft’s grants, donations, and discounted products and services, a critical step for nonprofits unable to afford high-cost secure software.
Through these efforts, 35 out of 51 organizations that applied for Microsoft Nonprofit Solutions successfully received approval to use these secure software and products. The two-day training session was designed to ensure these organizations could effectively utilize these tools to safeguard their operations and data against digital threats.
Pioneering Access to Microsoft’s Nonprofit Program
This marks the first time these organizations have gained access to Microsoft’s suite of secure products and software through its global nonprofit program. The introduction of these tools is a game-changer for CSOs in Somalia, many of which have previously faced significant digital security challenges. With these resources, organizations can now protect sensitive data, strengthen network security, and enhance their overall digital resilience.
A Legacy of Support and Capacity Building
The recent training builds on PUNTNGO and Bareedo Platform’s ongoing commitment to digital security. Earlier this year, from March 2 to 4, 2024, the two organizations conducted a comprehensive three-day digital security awareness and training session for 108 CSOs, human rights defenders, activists, and journalists in Somalia. Facilitated by a professional digital security expert, the workshop addressed the digital challenges faced by participants in their work and daily lives, equipping them with practical skills and knowledge to mitigate risks.
Leading the Way in Digital Security
PUNTNGO takes immense pride in enabling local organizations in Puntland to access these cutting-edge digital products and services from Microsoft. By bridging the gap between nonprofits and essential digital tools, PUNTNGO is paving the way for a more secure and resilient civil society in Somalia. This initiative not only empowers organizations to combat cyber threats but also enhances their capacity to serve their communities more effectively.
As digital threats continue to evolve, initiatives like this underscore the critical importance of equipping civil society with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. PUNTNGO and Bareedo Platform’s efforts serve as a model for how collaborative action can create a safer and more resilient nonprofit sector.
